Project inspirations can simply be a collection of images in a folder, but they can also take the form of a moodboard—and I highly encourage you to create one!
A moodboard is simply an inspiration board that helps define the style and character you want to create for your brand by bringing together various graphics and images. If you've never made a moodboard before but would like to give it a try, here are some tips to help you get started.
Your inspiration can come from many sources. Don't limit yourself – look for it on Pinterest, Instagram, in magazines, or in everyday life. Your camera roll is a treasure trove of such ideas. Keep this in mind and whenever something catches your eye, capture it. It's the combination of different elements that will create a unique atmosphere around your brand.
Before you start creating your moodboard, ask yourself: what emotions and values should your brand communicate? Do you want it to be elegant, bold, friendly, or perhaps minimalist? Imagine how you want your clients to feel when they interact with your brand.
Gather elements that speak to you but also align with your values and style. Your moodboard should include:
- Colours that evoke specific emotions
- Images that reflect your vision
- Typography that matches your brand’s style
- Textures that add depth to your identity
- Illustrations, icons, or vector embellishments that enhance your brand’s aesthetic
At this stage, you need to make a preliminary selection and limit yourself to a few key colours, fonts, and visual styles to avoid creating confusion.
Once you've gathered your inspirations, it's time to arrange them into a cohesive whole. A moodboard shouldn't just look "nice" – its purpose is to show a clear direction for your visual identity. Arrange your chosen images, colours, and other elements in a way that captures your brand's vibe.
A great idea is to create a physical moodboard by printing out images and pinning them to a board. Hanging it above your desk can serve as a fantastic source of inspiration.
Creating a moodboard is a creative process – allow yourself some freedom! Take your time to reflect. Your moodboard should reflect not just trends but, most importantly, what feels authentic to your brand.
